“If we all did the things we are capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves.”
– Thomas Edison

Are You a PLU?

PLU
/people like us/ --  An initialism, not an acronym, commonly used as an adjective. Describes one with whom we share common values and a passion for personal development; one who believes success in life begins in the mind; a member of our tribe.

EXAMPLE:
Upon meeting the parents of your daughter’s boyfriend you say,
in your best Paula Deen,
“That boy’s a keeper, y’all. His mama & daddy are PLUs.”

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

That’s not the Webster’s definition -- because there isn’t one -- but it’s the official brian-hicks.com interpretation. And yes, I also lifted Seth Godin’s term, but the shoe fits. Plus, it’s a really good book.

PLUs are all about fulfilling Thomas Edison’s admonition, “If we all did the things we’re capable of doing, we would literally astound ourselves,” but they also understand what John Wesley said over 200 years ago: “God lit me on fire and people came to watch me burn.”

PLUs recognize the fire is God-breathed.
It's not something we create on our own; it's something we're endowed with. I know, that sounds like something from the Constitution, and it's true that I sound like a Tea Party member talking about the 2nd amendment when I get on a roll, but I believe in my core that each of us is born with a flame inside. It's the flame of our purpose. It's the reason God put us here.

And it doesn't matter what the fire is - writing a novel, starting a business, maintaining a family - if we don't keep that fire burning, no one will come to watch us burn.

And whether we're selling books, insurance, a dream or a better future, if no one is coming to watch us burn, we're in trouble.

PLUs get this. They know personal development is the way we keep our fire burning, and they strive
regularly to find ways to do just that. They also know that personal development isn't about posters or quotes taped to their bathroom mirror. They know it's more about affirming the truth of where they are and seeking to improve their circumstances. If a quote helps, that's great - but the quote must do more than make them feel good. It must move them to action.

The question, of course, is, “Are you a PLU?”

Since it can be a daunting question, we put together a checklist to help you:

      • If you know it’s pronounced “P.L.U.” (like IBM) and not plu (as in “the flu”), you probably are.

  • If it bugs you that we write it without the periods because it looks better & we make it plural by adding an “s” even though it’s grammatically incorrect, you’re probably not.

  • If you’ve heard Brian say, “There are no gas logs in your heart. You have to tend that flame every day or it will go out.” And you checked out Leviticus 6:12-13 and read his Tend The Flame story for the source of that philosophy. And you think he has a point, you probably are.

  • If you believe walking on hot coals or discovering some lost secret will help you live your dreams, you’re probably not.

  • If you believe success means discovering & living out the purpose for which God created you, you probably are.

  • If you believe success means making more money than Steve Jobs, you’re probably not.

  • If you can quote Zig Ziglar faster than you can quote Jesus Christ...Well, I’m glad you came & hope we can recover together.

  • If you’ve read The Tinderbox Tapes and can’t wait for Brian’s next novel, WELCOME ABOARD, MY PLU FRIEND!!!
