I'm an author, speaker and personal development advocate living outside Nashville, Tennessee. I've been self-employed virtually all my working life, beginning as a college student, working my way toward a Bachelor's Degree in Speech Communication way back when New Kids on the Block were hangin' tough (and were still kids, for that matter).
Simply put, I'm a preacher's kid with a heart for helping people live their dreams.
My experience has taught me that we're all created for a purpose, and the only way we'll achieve that purpose is by learning and growing in order to get out of our own way. I'm fascinated by the whole process.
I also believe that personal development gets a bad rap because of the stuff I mentioned up top. Thus, I've made it my mission to provide what you might call "Motivational Festivus" - Personal Development for the rest of us; the NORMAL people who simply dream of creating a new world for themselves & their families and are looking for ideas & inspiration along the way - without the cheese.
I'm a 42-year-old married father of three boys, which means two things:
1. I've lived enough life to offer you a perspective based on real experience (22 years in business/19 years of marriage/14 years of parenthood);
2. I'm WAY out of my comfort zone in the way we're delivering content on the web these days, with social media and all that comes with it.
In my day, an author/speaker wrote books, recorded tapes or CDs, went to a meeting, told his/her story and sold said books & tapes in the back of the room. Pretty much end of story. Oh, and did I mention that all that information cost LOTS of money - to both produce and purchase? But this ain't your grandpa's venue.
No, this is a new day where information is often free and it's flowing faster than ever. Of course, the issue here isn't what I'm comfortable doing; it's what I'm capable of doing -- And that's a huge part of my message: If I can do it, so can you.
Fortunately, my past life prepared me for this.
For 20 years, I worked as an independent contractor with the #1 supplemental health insurance company in the world, primarily motivating salespeople through personal development learned over a lifetime of study. You can read more in my speaker bio.
I taught a couples Bible Study for several years. While teaching John Ortberg's If You Want to Walk on Water, You've Got to Get Out of the Boat, my wife & I realized a couple of things:
1. That's the best book title EVER;
2. It was time to get out of the boat.
So in 2009, at age 40, I "retired" at the top of my game (Yeah, it's a cliche'; but it's true) and we moved our family from Southwest Georgia to Nashville. We chose July 4th because "Independence Day" had a nice ring to it. After all, how free do you feel when you finally get out of the boat and give water-walking a chance? Though I'd been an independent contractor, I'd been one with a Fortune 500 company behind me. Now, I was stepping out of that boat, the one I'd known since college, and tentatively tip-toeing across the lake toward my dreams - leaving behind the comfort & contentment of the boat.
That's when I learned that with freedom - true freedom - eventually comes freak-out. Between the isolation & the risk and all the unforeseen events, you begin to question EVERYTHING. If you're not careful, all this questioning leads to paralysis; and when you're walking on water, that won't cut it.
